Facilities
The QUAD building is purpose built and designed to be a lively, accessible and inspiring building to spend time in.
Accessibility
QUAD is a fully accessible building, with a lift to the upper floors and accessible toilets on every floor. There are wheelchair spaces available in both cinemas. More information will be available when the building opens to the public.
Contemporary art gallery spaces
The gallery space will display work from local, national and international artists. The programme will be exciting, diverse and open to new ideas and experimentation. A full range of artforms will be shown in the galleries, from artists film and digital media, to painting, sculpture and photography. The gallery will be free to visit and the main exhibition will change approximately every six to eight weeks. However, the gallery won't be the only space in the building to display exhibitions; the wall and corridor space, as well as the digital screens around the building will also host changing exhibitions, so there will always be lots to see.
Participation Spaces
Participation, production and education activities will take place throughout QUAD, making full use of the facilities and spaces available. These will include arts workshop activity with schools and community groups, after school and holiday clubs.
Artist studio
This will host a programme of Artists Residencies lasting for fixed periods of time and feeding in to the wider QUAD programme. A residency may produce a new body of work for exhibition, provide workshops and master classes for groups, or be a home for research and experimentation projects.
BFI (British Film Institute) Mediatheque
QUAD is the first venue outside of London to host a BFI Mediatheque pod an exciting and unique collection of film and television from the BFI National Archive.
Using state of the art computer technology, you will be able to browse and view hundreds of films and television programmes from the earliest days of cinema to recent TV favourites. From locally made documentaries and home movies to feature-length masterpieces of cinema history, the regularly updated programme will be sure to fascinate, entertain and inspire you.
Digital Suite
A creative technology room accommodating high spec computer workstations. This will be used for digital workshops, artistic creation and short courses. Computers can also be used for on-line viewing of exhibitions and interactive media activities.
Editing Suite
The video editing suite will be available for use by artists and community groups as well as the commercial and creative industries sector. There will also be a programme of short courses on a diverse range of subjects including filmmaking and editing.
Cinema
There are two dedicated cinema screens in QUAD, which will show the best in international, independent and Hollywood cinema seven days a week, together with community screenings and education events. QUAD is also planning festival screenings, film seasons and special events. Cinema 1 will seat 234 people and Cinema 2 will seat 118 people on luxury seats, with state of the art projection and sound equipment. There will also be a number of double seats available in both cinemas.
The Box
This is the space that sits above the entrance hall. The glass that forms the external walls has been designed by international glass artist Alexander Beleshenko. The glass design expresses the creative energy and buzz of the activity that will happen inside QUAD. The Box is a multi-purpose flexible space and is an important symbol of QUAD being more than the sum of its parts. This is where the various programme strands cross over and go beyond art and film and into territory that blurs the boundaries between visual arts and cinema and explores new ground.
It is planned to accommodate around 60 seats. These can be used to create an intimate viewing lounge, classroom or club-style atmosphere. They can also be cleared away to leave an empty studio or exhibition space. This space along with the other spaces throughout the building will be available for private and corporate hire.
Cafe Bar
The QUAD Cafe Bar will be a lively and flexible space. Whether you drop in for a coffee in the morning, a snack at lunchtime or a pre-screening meal you will be sure of a unique and family friendly environment. The menu will be fresh and distinctive, using local produce wherever possible and offering extensive vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.
