Angela Verdon's Commission

Angela Verdon

One of the permanent pieces of art on display in QUAD has been commissioned from international ceramic artist Angela Verdon. The creation of the piece is already well under way in preparation for its installation when the building is open to the public.

The piece will be displayed in the void above the entrance space, and it will be a frieze created out of bone china that is immediately visible as you enter the building.

Angela is a local Derby-based artist who has achieved an international reputation for her work, and uses a material that is very much associated with the city. Angela spent a year as the artist in residence at Royal Crown Derby in 2000, and is again being supported by Royal Crown Derby through workspace and materials for this project.

The frieze will be made up of a series of individual ceramic motifs that are all unique in shape, which then hang together to create an abstract ceramic wave. The translucent material will be lit with natural light and spotlights that will create shadows that add depth and texture and constantly change during the day to create an impressive welcome as you enter the building.
