A Darkness More Than Night - New Exhibition

Cerith Wyn Evans

During the coldest and darkest months of the year, you are invited to a new exhibition entitled A Darkness More Than Night in QUAD Gallery from 11th November 2011 until 29th January 2011.

A Darkness More Than Night explores contemporary art through 'noir', a genre most readily associated with stylish Hollywood crime dramas of the 1940s and '50s, yet whose precursors date back through nineteenth century literature to Greek tragedy. Taking a forensic approach, the exhibition considers the aesthetics and mood of noir through key themes of the genre, and features contributions by international contemporary artists working across a variety of media.

Artists

Artists presented in the exhibition include: Thom Andersen (USA), Chris Burden (USA), Mike Cooter (UK), John Divola (USA) Douglas Gordon (DE/UK), Johan Grimonprez (BE), David Noonan (UK / AU), Hadrian Pigott (UK), Laure Prouvost (UK / FR), Fergal Stapleton (IR/UK), Nicole Wermers (UK/DE), Cerith Wyn Evans (UK).

A Darkness More Than Night is curated by Rosie Cooper and Ariella Yedgar and produced by QUAD. The exhibition is complemented by the free booklet Miscellany of Noir and a noir Season of themed workshops, events and film screenings.

Opening Night

The exhibition preview takes place on Thursday 10th November 2011, from 6:30pm. Join us for noir themed cocktails in a speakeasy inspired QUAD Café bar with projections of 1920s jazz clubs and DJ Stephen Coates / DJ Clerkenwell Kid, soundtrack composer for 'L.A. Noire', a 2011 noir video game published by Rockstar Games. Please RSVP to theoffice@derbyquad.co.uk

Extra Gallery Spaces: Emphasise

In conjunction with the exhibition A Darkness More Than Night, QUAD's Extra Gallery spaces will feature newly commissioned projects by artists and QUAD Youth Forum. QUAD's Youth Forum is a group of young creatives aged 14-21, who meet regularly to make work and exchange ideas in response to QUAD's programme of art and film. QUAD's Youth Forum have been working in collaboration with London based artists Kelda Hole, Arnold Borgerth, Carolyn Lefley and Neil Kelly in a series of workshops that explore techniques and ingredients of noir. The resulting exhibition, entitled Emphasise, will be on display in QUAD Corridors and Digital Screens from 11th November 2011.

The exhibition investigates and emphasises noir as a genre through photography, soundscapes and installation. Following the exhibition in QUAD's corridors spaces, the work will then be taken to the ART HUB Gallery in London in February to attract a further audience and promote collaboration with young people in South East London. The show is curated by Neil Kelly, Marcus Reading and Derby QUAD Youth Forum.

Season of Noir

The exhibitions are part of a Season of Noir in QUAD, which includes films, events and food. QUAD Cinema has programmed a special season of noir films, the BFI Mediatheque at QUAD will feature a new noir Collection and noir themed cocktails and food will be on offer in the QUAD Café bar, in addition to further related events in QUAD throughout the duration of the noir Season.
