FORMAT International Photography Festival launches in Derby

The 2011 FORMAT International Photography Festival 'Right Here, Right Now: Exposures from the Public Realm' launched in QUAD, Derby on Thursday 3rd March with previews of the exhibitions throughout the city.
Opening speeches were broadcast live on the Big Screen in the Market Place, and included celebrated Photographers and FORMAT Patrons; Brian Griffin and Joel Meyerowitz. The launch evening in QUAD was attended by 500 people and included internationally acclaimed Photographers and names from the Photography Industry including Bruce Gilden, Richard Kalvar, Chris Steel Perkins and James Dodd, John Maloof and Fred Baldwin.
Over 200 people including photographers, artists and national press have attended the FORMAT Conference in QUAD to hear talks by internationally photographers, and to engage and debate on the latest developments in Street Photography. Guest speakers include the photographers Nick Turpin, Michael Wolf, Mark Sealy, Nate Larson & Marni Shindelman, Bruce Gilden, John Maloof, Sophie Howarth, Sara T'Rula, Amy Stein and Yumi Goto.
FORMAT launch weekend also includes keynote events; Portfolio Reviews with publishers, festival directors, editors, curators and photographers; A Masterclass in Street Photo Lighting with Brian Griffin; Artists' talks with Richard Kalvar, Chris Steele Perkins and Grant Smith (BJP) and Joel Meyerowitz (this talk is now sold out); Comedy And Awards Night featuring Al Pitcher and a Morning Art Walk.

The FORMAT International Photography Festival has been curated around the theme of street photography through a wide variety of approaches and celebrates the wealth of contemporary practice in international photography. It is an opportunity to see an incredible range of new work alongside some of the best-known practitioners in the world, as well as developing opportunities for audiences to see, debate, develop and engage in the best of what photography is and can be. The festival runs in QUAD and venues around Derby from 4th March until 3rd April 2011.
