Game/Play is a collaboration between Q Arts, Derby and HTTP, London. A selection of different works will be simultaneously shown at both venues as well as online, to provide a place for creative exchange between visitors to the two spaces.
This exhibition explores relationships between ‘play’ and ‘game’ in the digital arts. From playful interactions to goal-oriented gaming, the range of artworks examines our relationships with each other as game players or gallery goers. Game/Play creates a dialogue between the two positions, both practically and conceptually.
The works exhibited at Q Arts welcomes a creative response from the audience as active participants. They create spaces for socio-dramatic play through physical action and response. Works are selected from a wide range of production contexts, from socially engaged art games to those created for the commercial games industry. Q Arts are commissioning Simon Poulter, Low Brow Trash and other artists to create works that explore these themes and engage critically with the territory.
HTTP will showcase independently produced video games selected by Corrado Morgana for their divergence from commercial game-types and their reflexive and critical awareness. Alongside these a social sculpture by ‘girl gamer’ Mary Flanagan, will be installed. [giantJoystick] explores collaboration and individual agency in public game play. Players collectively play classic arcade games with a nine foot tall joystick, modelled after the Atari 2600 joystick. This work introduces the ideas of this high profile, American feminist games artist, to this country for the first time.
The online element of Game/Play features multi-user works, such as Furtherfield’s VisitorsStudio www.visitorsstudio.org a collaborative audio-visual play space. These will be presented in all venues and may be accessed online by remote users as open social spaces. A series of online events, performances and workshops will create opportunities for more interaction between gallery visitors and remote audiences.
This project will engage with audiences of all ages and with diverse life experiences. A series of workshops are planned at each venue using the Game/Play website and connect audiences within the project. The website www.game-play.org.uk will also create a dialogue with commissioned texts and links to key projects in this field.
Game/Play will tour from September 2006 - January 2008 alongside a series of online events that explore connections between gallery visitors and online audiences. The team behind the project is Giles Askham (curator and coordinator), Corrado Morgana (independent curator) , Louise Clements (Q Arts), Ruth Catlow and Marc Garrett (HTTP). Game/Play is funded by Arts Council England and Awards For All.
