Ask anyone... they will tell you about the den they had as a child, wether it was in the woods, up a tree, under the bed or behind the bus shelter. Later as we grow into adults we still need a private space to escape to and call our own.
Groups of young people in Derby have researched the idea and identity of the den, designing and creating their own dens through animation, sculpture, photography and film workshops. They have considered dens as places of fun and enjoyment, safety and refuge and comfort and secruity. Their highly inventive work, brimming with ideas and stories, offers a rare glimpse into the private worlds of others. Visitors of all ages will also be able to add their personal memories to the display and help create a den.
Hidden is the culmination of a two year project led by Q Arts and funded through ESF Co-Financing Objective 3 through Derbyshire Learning and Skills Council and a number of groups in Derby. These include the young people from three Pubil Referral Units, the Youth Offending Services and young people will achieve OCN qualifications in a range of Visual Arts subjects. Several of those involved will also be focusing their energy and ideas into co-curating the exhibition.
