In the West, the Arab world has become synonymous with confrontation and violence. Terrorist attacks, the war in Iraq, the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, modernists and fundamentalists; all dominate global news daily.
But how representative is this of a region that extends from Morocco to Oman, from Syria to Sudan? How does the way those within this region see themselves relate to how the region is seen from outside? How do Arab photographers look at their society and themselves? At the heart of NAZAR lie stories hidden behind the headlines and images challenging our image of a world we thought we knew.
In over 100 images from Arab and Western photographers, many of whom are making their UK premiere at Q Arts, NAZAR - Arabic for seeing and reflection - provides a unique insight into the quality and diversity of contemporary Arab photography.
NAZAR is a Noorderlicht Photofestival exhibition toured in partnership with Q Arts and the Photography Gallery in Dublin. Noorderlicht Photofestival in Groningen, Holland has been running since 1990 and stems from the longest established photography gallery in the Netherlands.
