Blurring the boundary between the physical gallery space and live work on the web, Net:Reality promises to merge the ethereal notions of cyber space with the aesthetics of a physical exhibition. Seven key practitioners of Internet art have been comissioned to create new artwork that exists both virtually and physically.
Michael Takeo Magruder tackles the iconic nature of mass media and global communication by digitally distorting front pages of the BBC internet news service. The resulting 'digital paintings' are both beautiful and political. Stanza's The Emotional State of the Metropolis explores the world of surveilance. IDphone, by Simon Biggs, explores I.D. and the Freudian notion of the Id by exploiting the use of video phones. In contrast, Jessica Loseby's Position/Disposition investigates the absurd compatibility between the digital and the domestic, contrasting the cyber age with her role as a mother.
The net-based work will be available at the same time as the exhibition at www.net-reality.org and on show at Trigger. Net:Reality is supported by Arts Council England and curated by Michael Takeo Magruder, 20 - 21 Visual Arts Centre and Q-Arts.
