Non-Specific Threat
Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, Willie Doherty has always examined the complexities of living in a divided society. An undercurrent of fear pervades his world of latent violence and veiled threats. The male subject was chosen because he appeared on television as a menacing and violent character. Here, he emerges from dark alleyways and stands defiantly at street corners. He arouses our desire to recognise and scrutinise the ‘face of evil’ perhaps framed by our experience of how different governments and the media have historically represented and continue to define the terrorist. The photographs adopt the conventions of portraiture but deny us any details about the subject. He exists as a type whose purpose and whose social and economic status we are invited to speculate about. He is simply a Non-specific Threat. Part of FORMAT05 - a season of photography in Derby.
