“Fear Eats The Soul is urgent and contemporary: it means something relevant in 1974, and in 2017.” ★★★★ – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

The gripping tale of a courageous romance between Emmi, a white Polish-German woman, and Ali, a young Moroccan man.

The story is inspired by Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows, but switching the film to be set among the racist middle classes of post war Munich adds more layers to the drama. There is a quiet desperation that echoes around the characters in the film.

Shot over 15 days, and meant as a filler movie in between bigger movies, Fear Eats The Soul has stood the test of time to emerge as one of the premiere films in Fassbinder's back catalogue.
