Autumn Creative Courses Begin

The new season of creative and digital courses begin again: From practical subjects such as Photography, film-making, Graphic Design to theory-based creative writing and film courses.

In the lead up to Bonfire Night, budding photographers can take to the streets of Derby to learn techniques to best capture the night including exposure and shutter settings in a Night Photography course taking place on two Thursday evenings,1st and 8th November, from 6:15pm until 8:45pm. The cost is £55, £45 Concessions.

Adobe InDesign: Level 1 is an introductory course to learn to create professional web and print designs using Adobe ‘InDesign’ software. The course is suitable for Mac or PC users and takes place over the two Saturdays, taking place 20th and 27th October from 10:30am until 4:30pm; the cost is £150, £120 Concessions.

Two of QUAD’s popular Creative Writing courses are back in October. Creative Writing: From Idea to Publication is an eight week course ideal for anyone interested in starting writing or writers looking for a refresher course. It will cover all the tools you need to discover your writing talent, explore what makes a great story and practical information to progress it with agents and publishers. Creative Writing: From Idea to Publication takes place on Mondays from 15th October until 3rd December, running from 6:30pm until 9:00pm. The cost is £120, £110 Concessions.  Creative Writing: Starting A Novel And Finishing It is an eight-week course ideal for those wanting to launch into writing novels, looking at the process from first developing the idea, through planning, plotting and completing the manuscript. Creative Writing: Starting A Novel And Finishing It takes place on Wednesdays, from 17th October until 12th December and runs from 6:30pm until 9:00pm. The cost is £120, £110 Concessions.

Three film courses will explore specific genres. In time for Hallowe’en, No More Room In Hell: Zombie Film Course will include the voodoo varieties of I Walked With A Zombie, the classic George A Romero’s films and the zombies of 28 Days Later, Cult Film Historian Darrell Buxton takes a journey looking at the great movie monster success story. No More Room In Hell: Zombies Film Course takes place on Thursdays from 11th October until 8th November 7:00pm – 9:00pm. In place of the session on 1st November, participants will be able to attend a Hallowe’en screening on Wednesday 31st October of Night Of The Living Dead. The course, including the screening costs £35, £32.50 Concessions.

Ben Spiller, artistic director of 1623 theatre company based at QUAD will lead a brand new film course entitled Directors Of Shakespeare. This six-week course is a chance to discover more about the directors with the vision and drive to adapt Shakespeare's plays for the Big Screen. Focusing on five very different directors and their unique contributions to our understanding of Shakespeare; Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles, Akira Kurosawa, Kenneth Branagh and Julie Taymor. Directors Of Shakespeare film course will take place on Tuesdays from 7:00pm until 9:00pm, running from 9th October until 13th November inclusive; The final session will include entry to a screening of Orson Welles’ The Chimes At Midnight at QUAD. Course fees are £40, or £38 Concessions.

There is an opportunity to step into the world of Silent Cinema with a film course looking at German Expressionism. German Filmmakers such as Fritz Lang (Metropolis), F. W. Murnau (Nosferatu) and G. W. Pabst re-defined the cinema; and this course will take an in-depth look at the period which created modern cinema. Silent Cinema: German Expressionism Film Course will take place from 1st November until 6th December on Thursday evenings from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. The session on 8th November will instead be entry to a one-off screening of Nosferatu with Live Musical Accompaniment on Saturday 10th November. The course fees, including entry to the screening are: £40 or £38 Concessions.
