Well the Oscars are over for another year but the buzz can still be felt through the avid cinema-goers and staff at QUAD. As we curse ourselves for missing an award-winning film or wish we’d seen them again, we can at least reflect on the ones that were well deserved winners or those that we thought should have taken home an award.
The categories each had some very strong contenders and highlighted the excellent selection of cinema that we have experienced over the last year. Many of the predictions from staff here at QUAD proved a struggle to call as each nomination had key factors that made it a potential winner.
There is one thing for sure though that Argo would no doubt snatch Best Picture. It was also not surprising that Life of Pi claimed the award for Best Cinematography and Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor for Lincoln.
Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook, Anne Hathaway won Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables and Christoph Waltz took Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained. All of which were firm favourites at QUAD and front runners for the awards.
Other popular films at QUAD: Searching For Sugar Man, Amour, Zero Dark Thirty, Anna Karenina and Brave also picked up awards but I was slightly surprised that Beasts Of The Southern Wild, The Impossible and The Master all narrowly missed out.
