SCREENWRITING BASICS

An eight-week course on Tuesday evenings 6:00pm - 8:30pm

Intermediate level Screenwriting

An eight-week course on Tuesday evenings 6:00pm - 8:30pm

23rd November - 14th December 2010
(break for Christmas)
4th January - 25th January 2011

Cost: £185 full price / £148 concessions inc VAT

Location: QUAD, Meeting Room

Applicants for this course will already be well versed in the basics of screenwriting and will understand what is meant by industry standard formatting, visual writing, character development, story structure and plot development.
You will already have a basic story premise for your short or feature film, which over eight weeks we will workshop to develop into a full short film script (up to 30 pages), or in the case of feature films will be developed into a professional standard five page treatment. This will entail a time commitment from you to write at home between sessions.

Acceptance onto the course is by submission only. Email one premise or a short synopsis (max 500 words) to: dariusp@derbyquad.co.uk by 29th October 2010. Successful applicants will be informed by 12th November 2010.


 
Digital Photography Skills (Beginners)

A four-week course on Wednesday evenings 6:00pm - 8:30pm

15th September - 6th October 2010

Cost: £120 (£96 concessions) inc Vat

This four week course is designed for individuals interested in developing skills around Digital Photography. Students will be guided through the process of creating a digital photograph for screen and print.

Guidance and tuition will be provided through demonstrations, practical training and discussion to create an image for a short screen based exhibition at QUAD.

This will include:
- using compact Digital Cameras vs. Digital SLR cameras
- setting up a home studio for Photography
- lighting techniques
- photographing people
- Basic image manipulation

It is recommended that you bring your own Digital Camera, however QUAD will provide a camera if required.

Video BASICS (Beginners)

A four-week course on Tuesday evenings 6:00pm - 8:30pm

7th - 28th September 2010

Suitable for ages 16+

ABOUT THE COURSE
A basic four week course ideal for anyone interested in learning the basics of planning, filming and editing a short film.  The course will involve mainly practical activities resulting in students working in small groups to plan, shoot and edit a three minute short film or advert.  There will also be stand up demonstration and teaching as well as smaller activities.

Students will use Apple Macs for editing their product in iMovie.  This course concentrates primarily on the basic visual aspects of filmmaking and sound recording will play little part in the students learning.

INTRODUCTION TO VIDEO EDITING USING FINAL CUT PRO (MAC)

A four-week course on Tuesday evenings 6:00pm - 8:30pm

ABOUT APPLE FINAL CUT PRO
Apple Final Cut Pro is a long established industry tool for video editing. It is highly recommended for film makers or anyone who is interested in furthering their skills in video post-production. Films edited using Final Cut Pro include: No Country for Old Men, The Simpson's Movie, Where the Wild Things Are and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

ABOUT THE COURSE
This is a basic, four week beginner's course for people who are new to editing with Final Cut Pro. The course will take place on Apple Mac computer systems and some basic knowledge of computers is recommended. This course will be a mixture of stand up demonstration, teaching and practice activities for students.

Setting up Final Cut Pro
Logging
Capturing
Importing
Introduction to basic timeline editing
Saving your work
Introduction to effects.

ABOUT ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
Adobe Photoshop is a long established tool used for graphic design, animation production, web design, photo manipulation, 3D texture design and much more. Photoshop is used extensively by many businesses and is a recommended tool for enhancing digital skills.

Adobe Illustrator is an industry tool used in graphic design (Posters/Flyers, Website graphics), Digital and print based Illustration (digitising hand-drawn images, turning photos into Vector designs, character design), designing artwork for animation and much more. As part of the Adobe Suite and can also be used in conjunction with other Adobe software including Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, Dreamweaver and In-Design.

ABOUT THE COURSE
This four week course is ideal for anyone who is interested in learning the basics of Adobe Illustrator and its versatile tool set. The course will be a combination of demonstrations, tutorials and project briefs.

Areas covered include:
Understanding Illustrator workspace
Drawing Simple Shapes using Primitives
Scanning images
Transformations
Masking
Layering artwork
Using Brushes
Working with Text and Live Trace (creating digital images from photos and drawn images).

This six week course will encourage you to push your own creativity within Adobe Photoshop and Graphic Design. You will work with the guidance of an experienced graphic designer to complete a series of individual images.  Basic experience with Photoshop including: tools, selection, layers, and colour correction are essential. Finished images will be exhibited as part of a screen based display and on QUAD's website.
