What’s it about?
Q Club has been successfully running since 2002 engaging young people in art activities, which challenge and inspire. Through the involvement of QUAD in the L2YP (the art of listening to young people) Project, which explored the use of participatory art as a tool for communication between young people and those in authority making decisions that affect their lives, a need was identified for initiating Q Club. Q Club gives the opportunity to engage and participate in arts activities, which young people would not normally have had the chance to experience, working alongside experienced artists.

Who’s it for?
Q Club is for children and young people aged between the ages of 8 – 13 years, from the Derby City area. Q Club provides a structured and developmental participatory arts workshops for children who have communication difficulties, behaviour problems, special educational needs and disabilities, with 50% of the places at Q Club targeted at children from the autistic spectrum. Most of these children have little opportunity to develop their social skills and are at risk of social exclusion. By attending Q Club it is hoped that the children’s self esteem will be boosted whilst developing new art skills and social skills via interaction with other group members and staff. Q Club members are integral to the development of these projects and their vision and enthusiasm are the drive behind both the themes chosen and the artistic process.

When’s it on?
Q Club runs about 18 sessions a year, in term time, on Wednesday evenings between 5pm to 6.30pm at QUAD in the Participation Space.

What we do?
The emphasis is on making fabulous artwork within a safe, friendly environment. Previous projects have included animations, computer games, giant puppet making, den building, giant board games, and much more. Q Clubs animations have been shown both at national and international film festivals and won awards. The projects and artforms chosen are devised from feedback and evaluations from the participants themselves to encourage a sense of ownership of their artwork.
