Final Screening at Metro Cinema

Metro Cinema is closing at its current temporary location (The Heap Lecture Theatre, University of Derby, Kedleston Road) on Sunday 23rd March. This is to enable the projection equipment to be removed and installed in QUAD. However, the last screening at Metro is a real treat for film fans. We have a special preview of the Oscar nominated film Persepolis (12A), not due to be released until April.

This animated version of Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical novels is a poignant first-hand account of Iran's troubled history from a young Iranian girl. An animation unlike any other; a live action drama could never tell the story with the clarity and inventive charm that makes the serious topic of this film easier to digest. It won the Jury prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival.

However, this film has caused controversy in some parts of the world. The Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) recently reported that it has been banned in Lebanon:

"The award-winning French animated film Persepolis has been banned in Lebanon, a country with strong cultural ties to France. Daily Variety commented that Lebanese authorities acted in order to avoid offending pro-Iranian members of the Lebanese opposition, which includes Hezbollah. Last year the Bangkok Film Festival banned the movie, which had been scheduled to open the festival, after officials at the Iranian embassy protested. The film concerns a young girl's experiences growing up in Iran at the time of the Islamic revolution in 1979."

If you would like to attend the screening of Persepolis on Sunday 23rd March at 7.30pm, booking is essential so please email cinema@derbyquad.co.uk or telephone the Box Office on 01332 340170.
