Cannes 2010 Blog 2

Cannes 2010

Things are heating up in Cannes - the temperature, security presence and the films in competition. There is no consensus as yet as to what might win the main prize but the current front runners are Another Year by Mike Leigh (filmed on location in Derby) and Of Men and Gods which I blogged about yesterday.

Having just watched Fair Game by Doug Liman I would not be surprised if this also had a strong showing and certainly Sean Penn is a good bet for best actor and Naomi Watts for best actress.

The queues have reduced a little but there are still waits of over an hour for most of the big competition films. Fair Game is a taught political thriller that pulls at the nerves and heartsrings in equal measure as political intrigue, conspiracy and downright wrongdoing are played against a backdrop of family life and the breakdown of the relationship between the two key protaganists (played brilliantly by Sean Penn and Naomi Watts).

Two other well reviewed films 'Hahaha' and 'Outside the Law' are being watched by film programmer Adam Marsh and I will get his thoughts in time for the next blog entry. Also follow my tweets (@adamlloydbuss) as I will sporadically fire in mini Cannes bulletins as and when I can escape the confines of the cinema!
