Inception Review

Review by Young Person's Critique Circle part of the 'Fusion' Project 'Inspiring Derby's Young People through Art, Culture & Heritage'
UK 2010 Dir. Christopher Nolan
Inception isn't your ordinary run of the mill Hollywood action/thriller, of course it is packed full of mind blowing effects as you would come to expect, but the depth of the plot is what truly makes this film one not to be missed.
A large proportion of the film is spent within dreams, this gives Nolan free reign to run riot with the effects, with the premise that anything is possible in dreams, whether it's watching the "dream architects" manipulate the scape in front of your eyes, or watching characters fight in an atmosphere without gravity, the effects leave the audience in a state of awe. Even the slower moving scenes mainly filled with dialogue, have been beautifully shot. We especially liked the contrast in appearance between the different dreams.
The character 'Mal' played by Marion Cotillard, adds extra depth to Dicaprio's character 'Cobb', also to the film itself, giving it an emotional core lacking from most big budget action flicks.
Whilst discussing the film, the only negative issue that came up, was that we thought that sometimes, parts of the plot felt a little spoon fed as apposed to being thought provoking, although by no means let this put you off as there's still plenty to think about!
Inception is an intense but exceptionally executed film, leaving the viewer feeling as if they have just been through a dream themselves. Everyone in the group felt very strongly about this film, we think that it is because the subject matter, dreams, is something that everyone can relate to and understand just how intensely bizarre and emotional they can be.
Memorable Quote
Eames: "They come here everyday to Dream?"
Attendant: "No, they come here everyday to wake up, the dream is their reality now"
Inception is showing at QUAD from Friday 16th to Thursday 29th July 2010.
