The Merry Gentlemen (15) Film Review

Lonely guy meets beautiful girl under a Christmas tree – sounds a bit soppy, but don’t be fooled, this film is the perfect antidote to over-sentimental festive tales.
A directorial debut from Michael Keaton, who also plays the lead role (the lonely guy... actually a suicidal hitman) opposite a gifted leading lady played by Kelly Macdonald (the aforementioned beautiful girl, who is running from an abusive marriage). Add to these troubled souls an alcoholic cop with romantic designs on the girl who is also investigating the murders committed by the hitman, and you’ve got an original and surprisingly sublime story, dark in places but not too bleak to be depressing.
The characters are allowed to build over time, particularly the amazing Kelly Macdonald who unpredicably keeps her Scottish accent for the role, which adds to the impression that she is isolated and a bit of a loner in a foreign country.
Give it a go – immerse yourself into this captivating film on a cold January evening.
