Hayward Touring Curatorial Open II
18th September - 31st October 2010
Ground Level explores how contemporary art practice, mapping and cartography collide. Traditionally the role of the cartographer has been to provide a geographically precise description of the landscape. However, rarely has it been a wholly objective enterprise. While technology increasingly grants access to the precision of satellite imagery, the cartographer's work has moved further from the ground into more contested areas such as ownership, rights to land, and the flows of people.

How do you curate an art exhibition?
17 regular visitors to QUAD are about to find out as they rise to a new challenge of curating a major national art exhibition of 20th and 21st century sculpture, painting and photography.
Following 10 months of lively debate and research the curators will select from the Arts Council Collection of 1,500 British artworks, featuring major figures who have attained international acclaim, including William Nicolson, Ken Kiff, Gillian Ayres, Grayson Perry, Patrick Caulfield and Lyn Chadwick alongside emerging talents and lesser known artists.
The curators bring to the project many combined years of experience and a wealth of expertise and enthusiasm for the arts. As part of the process they will travel to art stores in London and Yorkshire to view the collection and make their final decisions. They will present and interpret their chosen artworks from their own personal perspective ensuring that the exhibition will appeal to a wide and diverse audience. The exhibition's lead curator is Jane Bevan.
