The Long Player
QUAD & The Snug Recording Co present The Long Player - an evening dedicated to the 'album experience'
Music deserves you.
As with any art form, if you don't actually think about it, it might not have any meaning. It might be a connection you'll miss out on. Our relationship with music has changed a lot in the last 15 years or so. The march of technology has enabled us to be more flexible about where and when we do our listening, but has it also reduced the amount of time we dedicate solely to relaxing with a record? Has all music become background listening? In our constant multi-tasking, have we actually lost the ability to just sit, listen and consider what we hear? Sometimes we don't really connect with an album until we listen to it without distraction. A near impossible task in our busy, permanently connected lives - our listening opportunities might be limited to snatches during our daily commute or the radio sound-tracking a hectic working day. - it doesn't mean we're unable to develop a meaningful relationship with music, but it certainly makes it more difficult.
Do you ever miss getting a new record, going home and doing nothing but sitting comfortably and listening? Letting the music do its thing and allowing yourself to be influenced by it?
This is the inspiration behind The Long Player - to create the opportunity for a community of music lovers to get together, listen to a record and then discuss it and socialise over it. We're not enforcing a 'no talking' rule or dictating the way that people should listen to music. What we are doing is merely providing a record and an environment. Beyond that it's an entirely personal experience, one that we'd love to hear about afterwards.
We also want your suggestions of albums you want to hear! Click here to head over to our online suggestion box.
Monthly Mixtape/CD Swap
We also run a monthly Mixtape/CD swap! Each month we'll set a new theme loosely inspired by next month's album. It's an optional chance for us all to anonymously fire a little unguided missile of musical love to our fellow Long Players. We'll have a bucket on the night, just drop yours in and take one out. Artwork is optional but feel free to get creative. And if you can't make it down but would like to contribute a mix then feel free to add a Spotify link or similar to our facebook group.
Next meeting: Saturday 11th February 7.00pm in The Box
This month The Long Player is part of the 'Loose Connection' closing event for v.01 exhibition. The night kicks off with The Long Player presenting a full album playback of Cerulean by Baths accompanied by visuals created by the Five Lamps film-making community and Pixel Synthesis.
