Day 1 – BBC iPlayer
The BFG (1989)
Roald Dahl’s beloved novel is brought to animated life by legendary studio Cosgrove Hall with David Jason voicing the titular character. The BFG is the story of Sophie, an orphan who goes on a magical journey with a big friendly giant, creating wonderful dreams. However, there’s trouble ahead when they meet horrible giants who want to eat little children – will Sophie be able to stop them?
Kajaki: The True Story (2014)
Helmand Province in Afghanistan 2006, Kajaki Dam. A company of British soldiers encounter a dried-out river bed and under every step, the possibility of an anti-personnel mine; a mine that could cost you your leg – or your life. Tense British drama.
War Of The Worlds (2005)
Steven Spielberg’s remake of the classic 1953 science-fiction film adaptation of HG Wells’ classic novel about a dock worker’s fight to get his children to safety when merciless aliens attack Earth. As the family race through the streets of New York, they find themselves being chased by giant tripods while alien vessels open fire on the retreating crowd, incinerating everything that get in the way.
A young gang of bullies are terrorised by the spirit of their former classmate Darren, who was driven to suicide by their torment. After Darren’s death, the group begin to fall victim to a series of twisted and gruesome attacks as he takes his revenge on those who made his life a misery.
Ladies Who Do (1963) – Amazon Prime
When the cleaning ladies in the city learn that ruthless businessmen (played by Harry H. Corbett and Jon Pertwee) want to redevelop their homes, they decide to take on the tycoons! Fun British comedy with lots of familiar faces like the always wonderful Robert Morley.
The Red Turtle (2017) – Amazon Prime
Through the story of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds, The Red Turtle recounts the milestones in the life of a human being. Dutch director Michael Dudok de Wit collaborates with the legendary Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli for this Oscar nominated masterpiece.
The Brand New Testament (2015) – All4
Did you know that God is alive and lives in Brussels with his daughter? Jaco Van Dormael (Toto The Hero, Mr Nobody) brings his quirky vision to life. God’s 10 year old daughter causes Him some serious problems after discovering how He treats humankind.
The Handmaiden (2016) – All4
BAFTA-winning drama set when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule based on the novel by Sarah Waters. A conman’s plan to defraud an heiress creates a web of duplicity and sexual intrigue.
Day 3 – Amazon Prime (available with a Free Trial Period)
A Serious Man (2009)
The Academy Award winning Coen Brothers direct this thought-provoking drama set in 1967 that centres around a Midwestern professor whose life begins to unravel when his wife sets out to leave him.
Vice explores the epic story about how a bureaucratic Washing ton insider quietly became the most powerful man in the world as Vice-President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today. Christian Bale transforms himself into Dick Cheney for Adam McKay’s biography, with Amy Adams, Sam Rockwell both providing Oscar nominated support as Lynne Cheney as George W. Bush.
The Prestige (2006)
As Christopher Nolan sets to be one of the first filmmakers to release a big film in the post-Covid 19 world, I thought we could visit one of his smaller films. Set in the late 19th century London, this mysterious story of two men is full of twists and turns. From the time they meet as young magicians, Robert and Alfred are friendly competitors. But this evolves into bitter rivalry, making them life-long enemies and jeopardizing the lives of those around them. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman star as the duelling magicians alongside Scarlett Johansson.
The Day Shall Come (2019)
Chris Morris’ new film is about an impoverished preacher who brings hope to the Miami projects who is offered cash to save his family from eviction. He has no idea his sponsor works for the FBI who plan to turn him into a criminal by fuelling his madcap revolutionary dreams.
Day 4 -My5
The Last Of The Mohicans (1936)
Adaptation of the classic novel sees Alice and Cora Munro attempt to find their father, a British officer in the French and Indian War. They are set upon by French soldiers and their cohorts, Huron tribesmen led by the evil Magua. Fighting to rescue the women are Chingachgook and his son Uncas, the last of the Mohican tribe, and their white ally, the frontiersman Natty Bumppo, known as Hawkeye.
Ride In The Whirlwind (1966)
Three cowhands are on their way to a cattle drive when they get into an altercation with a posse. Two of them, Wes and Vern escape but are now branded as ‘outlaws’ and wrongly pursued relentlessly by the posse. Monte Hellman’s acid western stars Jack Nicholson, Cameron Mitchell and Harry Dean Stanton.
Angriest Man In Brooklyn (2014)
Believing he only has 90 minutes to live, a perpetually angry middle-aged man (Robin Williams) begins a wild, and wildly funny – journey to make amends with his family and friends. With Mila Kunis, Peter Dinklage, James Earl Jones, Richard Kind and Melissa Leo.
When a hard nosed drill sergeant (Samuel L Jackson) and his troops go missing on a routine training mission, an army investigator (John Travolta) is called in. But everyone seems to have a different version of events.
Day 5 – BBC iPlayer
Eric Clapton: Life In 12 Bars (2017)
Documentary charting the life of Eric Clapton, a life of restlessness and tragedy. Stretching from his traumatic childhood, to his long struggle with drugs and alcohol, and the tragic loss of his son in a heart-breaking accident. Told through his own words and songs, as well as those of his family, friends, musical collaborators, contemporaries and heroes including BB King, Jimi Hendrix and George Harrison.
Nikolay, a hot-headed car mechanic lives with his second wife Lilya and his son Roma in his self-built home in a small seaside northern town. With the help of his old friend Dmitriy, now a Moscow lawyer, he is appealing the result of a court case brought by the corrupt mayor to seize his home and land. With his opponent not playing by the rules, Nikolay finds himself in a David and Goliath battle of biblical proportions.
On Chesil Beach (2017)
Romantic drama based on Ian McEwan’s novel. Young university graduates from different social classes get married after an intense but non-physical affair. She is talented and ambitious classical violinist from a supercilious striving family, he is from humbler stock, but despite their intense love for each other, the honeymoon proves to be a huge challenge to their relationship. Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle star as the newlyweds.
99 Homes (2015)
Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield), a hard-working construction worker, struggles to keep the home he shares with his mother and son when he becomes unemployed. When his family is summarily evicted by utterly ruthless Rick Carver (Michael Shannon), his one offer of work comes from Carver himself and despite his qualms he starts learning the trade of home repossession.

Satan In High Heels (1962)
Stacey Kane (Meg Myles) is the anti-hero of Satan in High Heels, a carnival stripper who goes on the lam and proceeds to bend the nightclub world to her devices in a series of intense power plays. The New York club scene acts as the tawdry backdrop to this flamboyant, fetish-laden sexploitation film. Shot through with tinges of film noir, Satan In High Heels is a rollicking ride of burlesque nightclubs, underground S&M, and fabulous fetish wear, starring pin-up model Meg Myles.
Night Tide (1961)
A sailor (Dennis Hopper’s first starring role!) falls in love with a girl in a beatnik jazz club, and is drawn into a strange world in which she may be a mermaid. Turning Venice Beach locations into undeniable film noir images, Night Tide is part gothic horror, part mood piece, all fever dream. Enter the witchy world of 60s B-movies! A young (but still crazy) Dennis Hopper starred in Curtis
Harrington’s career-launching indie horror flick, which spins atmospheric, playful tales of the supernatural in the vein of Val Lewton or Carnival Of Souls. A cult classic, now restored in HD!
Emerald Cities (1983)
In a near-future 1980s, a small desert town’s Santa Claus goes to the big city in search of his wayward daughter. On that simple premise hangs this delirious punk rock collage of Cold War fears, suburban encroachment, and magic mushroom sandwiches. A no-budget 80s dystopian film about an existential, drunken mall Santa? Count us in. This ultra-dark American comedy, which predates Repo Man but shares its tone, is infused with end-of-the-world anxieties about total nuclear annihilation and is tuned to the sounds of Flipper and The Mutants.
Wild Guitar (1962)
An aspiring pop singer lands in L.A. to try and make it big, and is swallowed up by the evils of showbiz in this delightfully low-budget musical. Directed by underground filmmaker Ray Dennis Steckler, with Vilmos Zsigmond as Director of Photography, this ultimate rags-to-riches saga teeters on the edge of spoof.
Day 7 – All 4
On The Road (2014)
Sam Riley (Control) stars as a young American writer who hits the road in 1947 in search of poetry, parties and sex. With Kristen Stewart, Elizabeth Moss and Garret Hedlund. Based on the seminal book by Beat writer Jack Kerouac.
Night Comes On (2018)
Recently released from juvenile detention on the eve of her 18th birthday, Angel LaMere co-opts her 10-year-old sister’s unwitting help and sets out to seek vengeance for her mother’s murder. Interesting tale on the effects trauma has on children.
A Fantastic Woman (2017)
Marina, a transgender woman who works as a waitress and moonlights as a nightclub singer, is bowled over by the death of her older boyfriend. She soon becomes a suspect in her boyfriend’s accidental death. Sebastian Lelio (Disobedience, Gloria)’s film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.
In Between (2016)
Mouna Hawa, Sana Jammelieh and Shaden Kanboura star in this critically acclaimed drama about three Palestinian women who share an apartment in the heart of Tel Aviv. The three women try ti find a balance between traditional and modern culture.
