Creative Wellbeing is a new exhibition, part of FORMAT22 Presents in Derby, which includes artwork by participants who attended a variety of QUAD’s workshops. Various Creative Wellbeing groups worked with Photographer Jon Legge to learn digital photography skills. Participants were asked to bring an object which meant something to them, and then documented the objects using an improvised photography studio, to produce an archive of artefacts which describe people’s lives, journeys, families and culture. This archive is exhibited as a unique set of projected artworks which can be seen after dark at 50, Sadlergate.
Creative Wellbeing Curator, Abbie Canning, said “Many of the participants that access the groups who have participated in this exhibition, experience acute personal challenges. To have produced such quality work is a testament to all of the individuals involved and clearly demonstrates the positive impact that creative engagement can have on wellbeing. I am delighted that, with the support of our funders, we have been able to offer this unique opportunity to participants - who have created such a vibrant and interesting exhibition telling their individual stories – and am thrilled to be able to share and celebrate this achievement with the participants and the wider community”
The Creative Wellbeing groups from QUAD who participated in the activities and have work included in this exhibition are:
GoldsQUAD a weekly for anyone aged 50+ interested in creativity, learning new skills and trying new challenges in a supportive environment. Mindful Crafts a fortnightly group for adults experiencing mental health challenges, to learn new creative skills, improve confidence and self-esteem, funded by Derbyshire MIND. Creative ESOL, weekly workshops that teach new arts, crafts and digital skills in a relaxing welcoming environment to anyone whose first language is not English, funded by Derby City Council.
The Creative Wellbeing exhibition also includes images from inpatients at the Radbourne Unit which QUAD delivers monthly at The Royal Derby Hospital, funded by Derby NHS and the Safe Space Project - a fortnightly session QUAD delivers to rough sleepers at Derby City Mission, administered by Derby Homes and resourced through the Governments Rough Sleeper Initiative Grant that Derby City Council successfully applied for.
