#MassIsolation Reflections: Little semblance of Blue Demon’s vicissitudes, in Quarantine times
with QUAD Senior Curator, Peter Bonnell

QUAD’s Programme Team are sharing highlights from FORMAT’s mass-isolation project @massisolationformat that shows images and experiences shared during the lockdown due to Covid-19.

‘Little semblance of Blue Demon’s vicissitudes, in Quarantine times’, Jorge Monaco, @jorge.monaco04, www.jorgemonaco.com.ar/

"Face masks are now ubiquitous, the fashion choice du jour - although they may well prove to be essential parts of our everyday apparel for many years to come, if not forever. This image by Jorge Monaco, who is based in Argentina, is as the caption states a self portrait, featuring a man staring ahead, wearing a smart suit, tie and surgical-type face mask… and - perhaps jarringly, amusingly, terrifyingly - a colourful ‘Lucha libre’ style wrestlers mask. Portraiture can be difficult to achieve at the best of times for a photographer (for example, how do you convey character in a single image?) - but this image suggests more, an alter-ego - the Blue Demon, judging by the caption? - who, in his own inimitable way is striving to deal with the pandemic and what impact it is having on his life. This is, indeed, speculation on my part… but the image stood out simply that it was both well made and for the intrigue it elicited, and the notion of a habitual mask wearer forced to augment his appearance in unexpected ways."
