"My self-portrait, titled 'The Presence of an Absence, No.1', explores the complexities of modern medicine used to treat Epilepsy. Created in lockdown, the piece explores the complications I have experienced personally, regarding Absence seizures and diplopia since taking my medication Levetiracetam. The chemical structure of the medication is replicated in the self-portrait, indicating to the manipulative nature of the medication, and the way it can influence the individual physically and mentally. The work aims to challenge historical representations of Epilepsy throughout art, by demonstrating the features of Epilepsy that manifests when the seizures themselves remain dormant and overall, to share my personal experience with the complexities associated with living with a hidden disability."
