Christmas films and events at QUAD

Now that the nights are drawing in, we are starting to think about the festive season! Read on to find out what's coming up here over Christmas...

Christmas films 

Holiday Inn, from 1942, is a perennial Christmas favourite that paired Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire as entertainers, and rival suitors for Marjorie Reynolds, running an inn that is only open on the holidays. The film features a host of singing and dancing courtesy of Irving Berlin, including the first film appearance of the yuletide classic ‘White Christmas’. Holiday Inn (U) screens at QUAD from Sunday 10th to Wednesday 13th December. Regular Cinema ticket prices apply.

It’s A Wonderful Life is one of QUAD Christmas traditions. Set on Christmas Eve, the guardian angel Clarence is assigned to convince the desperate George Bailey not to take his own life. George is a thoroughly decent family man who has sacrificed his dreams for the citizens of the small town of Bedford Falls. When George decides he is worth more dead than alive, it’s up to Clarence to help him realise how many lives his good deeds have touched. It’s A Wonderful Life (U) screens at QUAD from Saturday 17th to Saturday 24th December. Regular Cinema ticket prices apply.

For Families, there is a Cine Kids screening of Arthur Christmas. When one little boy is missed out on Christmas Eve, it is up to Arthur Christmas, Santa’s young son, to save Christmas with a rebellious young elf, a retired Grandfather Christmas, an old sleigh and some very untrained reindeer. Arthur Christmas (U) screens at QUAD on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th December. All Cine Kids tickets are just £3.50 for all for Cine Kids members, membership is free and available from QUAD Box office.

There will be some less traditional QUAD film screenings too!

Gremlins is yuletide classic from 1984 starring Zach Galligan. The cute, adorable Mogwai Gizmo spawns a whole bunch of meaner friends who quickly turn into the malevolent Gremlins and bring a nightmare to the people of Kingston Falls. Zach Galligan will be in QUAD for a Q&A following the screening.Gremlins (12A) with Zach Galligan Q&A takes place on Sunday 3rd December at 7:00pm. Tickets are: £13 or £12 Concessions.

Die Harder: Double Bill includes Die Hard and Die Hard 2 starring Bruce Willis as NYPD cop John McClane, who takes a trip to LA to see his estranged wife and spend Christmas with his kids. But gets stuck in a skyscraper with a bunch of German terrorists. In Die Hard 2 John McClane is waiting for his wife’s plane to arrive in Washington DC when he gets word that terrorists have taken over the airport and the planes are circling the airport running out of fuel. It is up to McClane to stop the bad guys and save the planes from crashing. Die Hard & Die Hard 2: Die Harder Double Bill (15) screens on Friday 22nd December at and Saturday 23rd December. Tickets are: £13, or £11 Concessions.

Fans of '80s cinema won't want to miss John Landis's Trading Places (15), screening on Friday 15th & Saturday 16th December.

QIUAD will be presenting two screenings at Derby Cathedral in December; The Muppet Christmas Carol and Scrooge.

The Muppet Christmas Carol features Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and many other muppets who join Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is the cruel and heartless man who is visited by the three Ghosts Of Christmas Past, Present and Future and shown the error of his ways. A heart-warming Christmas classic perfect for all the family.

Scrooge, from 1951, features arguably the definitive portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge as played by Alistair Sim, also starring George Cole, Michael Hordern, Patrick Macnee and Meryn Johns. An adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’ and an unmissable classic. Christmas Screenings At Derby Cathedral take place on Saturday 23rd December. The Muppet Christmas Carol (U) screens at 4:00pm (doors open from 3:30pm) Scrooge (U) screens at 6:30pm (doors open from 6:00pm). Tickets are: £13, or £11 Concessions. A Family Ticket (2 adults 2 children) is: £30. Tickets for children under 3 years are: £3.50. Adult tickets for both films are: £18. 

QUAD will be presenting a live theatre version of A Christmas Carol with Lost Boys Theatre company. A new spin on Dickens' classic tale, this family friendly production brings together Dickens’ traditional ghost story, enhanced by digital cinema technology and projections.  A Christmas Carol (Advised PG) takes place on Friday 1st December at 5.30pm and at 7.30pm. Tickets are: £10 for adults, £8 for concessions, Family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) are: £25.

Family events

QUAD also has a Christmas-themed family friendly workshop. Winter Wonderland Minecraft is a family friendly workshop for young people to create, share and explore a winter world on QUAD’s own Minecraft server. A perfect opportunity for mum and dad to get that Christmas shopping done, the workshop is suitable for children aged five and above, those under eight years must be accompanied. Winter Wonderland Minecraft workshop takes place in QUAD on Saturday 16th December - drop in from 11:00am – 4:00pm, the last entry is 2:00pm and the cost is £3 per child per two hour session.


In QUAD Café’s a Christmas Menu will be available from the end of November, featuring a QUAD Xmas Burger and sandwiches including Turkey & Cranberry with chestnut stuffing, Turkey & avocado, or Cheddar and Christmas chutney. Sweets and cakes include; mince pies, seasonal homemade tray bakes and muffins. As well as speciality coffees, a Christmas hot chocolate menu which includes Gingerbread, Honeycomb or Black Forest with cream and marshmallows.
