Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn) is a bookshop clerk who might just have what it takes to be a modelling sensation. After inadvertently being discovered by fashion photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire), she is offered the chance to become the next big thing. Initially sceptical of the model lifestyle, Jo only agrees when a trip to Paris and the opportunity to meet her intellectual hero are thrown into the bargain.
