QUAD/FORMAT is delighted to announce that FORMAT Graduate Award winner Julia Perry will be participating in residency this June.

The residency is taking place from 3-9 June. Julia’s QUAD Gallery Instagram takeover will be between 3-7 June. Julia was selected as FORMAT Graduate Award from the BA [Hons] Photography course at the University of Derby.

Artist Bio:

Julia Perry is a British architectural photographer who received her BA (Hons) Photography degree in Derby, UK, with a Second Class Honours in 2023. The primary goal of Julia’s present research on brutalist architecture was to preserve the Derby Assembly chambers. She created her own concrete slabs and worked with mixed media to depict the Derby Assembly Rooms. She lives in the United Kingdom and works on different projects and has also photographed and captured sports photography. She has also won the FORMAT International Photography Festival Graduate Award in 2023

Concrete – In Memoriam (2023)
The Derby Assembly Rooms was designated for demolition in March 2015 by Derby City Council. The local press stated the council conceded that the building would never reopen and plans for its removal and replacement was in place. Designed by the famous architects Hugh Casson and Neville Conder and built in 1977, it is a rare example of Brutalist architecture for an event space in the UK post-war. Concrete: In Memoriam is a body of photographic and sculptural work that in 2023, considers the demise of important examples of British architectural design and visual uniqueness quintessential to local, national, and international heritage. Through making photographs of the building’s details, textures, patterns, and geometries, they are printed upon handmade concrete slabs. This presents a visceral render of material preservation and a gestural memorial of its aesthetics soon to be no more.
