Let us introduce you to the inimitable Cliff Twemlow, the Renaissance man who dreamed big, perhaps bigger than his budgets allowed. You’ve never heard of him…but polymath Twemlow was a nightclub bouncer, novelist, composer, singer, screenwriter, producer and actor who birthed a micro-film industry in his home city of Manchester. This engrossing documentary chronicles the many exploits of Twemlow, celebrating his tenacity and legacy of independent filmmaking. He first came into the spotlight with his book Tuxedo Warrior, based on his time as a bouncer. When the book was adapted into a film, Twemlow was inspired to start shooting his own direct-to-VHS films, creating B-movies like 1983’s ultra-violent G.B.H. (Grievous Bodily Harm), which was banned as a “video nasty” at the time.
This unbelievable life story is brought to the big screen by Paracinema favourite Jake West – director of the documentary Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape, as well as features Razor Blade Smile, Evil Aliens and Doghouse.
We are delighted to welcome Jake West back to Derby for an introduction and post screening Q&A.
