“Ken Loach could hardly have delivered a more resonant, timely or indeed angry swansong than this feature which takes up arms against the decay of national compassion” – Screen International
The Old Oak is the new film directed by Ken Loach, written by Paul Laverty and produced by Rebecca O’Brien, and completes their unofficial North East trilogy following acclaimed films including Sorry We Missed You and I, Daniel Blake. In an unlikely friendship, the landlord of an ailing local pub TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner) meets a curious young Syrian Yara (Ebla Mari) with her camera. Can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other? So unfolds a deeply moving drama about their fragilities and hopes.
Ken Loach will visit QUAD on the evening of Thursday 12 October to do a Q+A alongside a screening of The Old Oak (15). Tickets for that screening can be found at this page.
