QUAD is thrilled to announce that Nottingham-based profoundly deaf artist and political activist Zoe Milner is the recipient of the D/deaf Artist Studio Residency Bursary Award.
Zoe will have full access to our artist studio in March 2024 with mentoring and curatorial support from the QUAD Programme Team throughout the year.
Artist Bio and Statement:
I am a profoundly deaf artist and political activist based in Nottingham. I graduated with first-class honours with a BA Fine Art degree from Nottingham Trent University in 2023 and alongside this, I just received the award for the Fine Art Social Agenda. Just a few months after completing my BA degree, I exhibited my first-ever artworks outside of East Midlands; in Brighton and York.
In my practice, I am exploring throughout my time as a childhood life within the theme of deaf culture and political movement; use the provocative and strong typography, inspired by the deaf-related ‘BSL ACT NOW’ rally campaign, to educate audiences with a wake-call about the reality of the deaf community, highlighting equitable justice and much-needed attention in the front of audience. The use of vibrant colour painting, within contemporary art, highlights the build-up of tension and power as feelings of prejudice and communication difficulty throughout my journey as a deaf identity.
This allows them to change their perspective about the reality of deaf people; their lifestyle and language they normally used to communicate – British Sign Language.
