Experience light in Derby as never before!

For more information on Virtulight, including how to get it, and related events please visit the website.

This year Derby’s annual Festival of Light has gone digital…

Surtal Arts has been working with artist Ashok Mistry to develop a special trail of virtual light sculptures around Derby, that can be viewed using smartphones and tablet devices. The artworks use augmented reality via the Layar app, to come alive in key spots around the city.

Once the app is opened, you simply pick one of the 12 key points around the city, point your phone or tablet at the specified point of interest (e.g. a painting, or special Virtulight sign) and wait for the 3D sculptures to come alive!

Taking inspiration from Derby’s annual Festival of Light lantern parade produced by Surtal Arts, Virtulight is a series of site specific artworks in the public realm exploring how people regard, interact with, and use light through these unique playful sculptures.

 - Virtulight Artist: Ashok Mistry

 - Technical Director: Matthew Leach

 - Musical Score: Waqas Choudhary

The light trail is accompanied by a specially commissioned soundscape by bamboo flutist Waqas Choudhary, that you can hear alongside the visual display. The light sculptures form a trail through Derby, with the City Trail starting at QUAD and taking in key spots in the city centre, with the Cultural Trail exploring places of significance in Normanton. The trail considers how we understand and interact with the ephemeral presence of light through culture, philosophy and technology.
