Family friendly Summer Holiday events & activities

We have lots of creative and digital activities and family friendly films for families and young people of all ages over the fast approaching Summer Holidays.

Creative activities include SummersQUAD, QUAD’s free weekly family friendly arts and craft sessions for all ages. This year SummersQUAD explores the theme of leisure and crazy golf with a chance to design and make crazy mazes, mini crazy golf holes and a fun park, work on your own designs or contribute to a giant ball maze, SummersQUAD takes place in QUAD every Thursday in August (4th, 11th, 18th and 25th August) and there are two sessions to choose from in the morning or afternoon (10:30am to 1:00pm or 1:30pm to 4:00pm).  No pre-booking is required, but families will need to attend from start of the session to ensure a place.

For young people aged seven to sixteen, KidsQUAD and DigisQUAD are creative and digital workshops, children can be left unaccompanied in either sessions. KidsQUAD - creative arts activities for children aged seven to eleven - has a two summer workshops taking place between 1st and 5th August KidsQUAD: Superheroes and Villains Comic Making Workshop is a chance to imagine you have a superpower and are tracking down an evil villain who wants to destroy the world! Join QUAD artists to create a Superhero comic using Comic Life software.

KidsQUAD: Superheroes and Villains Comic Making Workshop takes place on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd August, the cost is £22.00 for both sessions. 

DigisQUAD - digital arts activities for young people aged 12-16 years - will be running a workshop to design and animate a 3D golf course inspired by the exhibition, Doug Fishbone’s Leisureland Golf. DigisQUAD: 3D Animated Golf takes place in QUAD on Monday 8th, Tuesday 9th & Wednesday 10th August, from1:30pm to 4:00pm. The cost is £45.00 for all three sessions. KidsQUAD and DigisQUAD places are limited, any children with additional support needs should come with their own care support.

There are also two Digital Workshops for young people themed around Minecraft and digital design. Returning for a second year, QUAD’s ‘Hack and Build’ event delves into the world of table top games. Table Top Hack and Build is a three day workshop suitable for ages ten to eighteen years, During the sessions, young people will work in teams with local artists and professionals to develop skills in digital design, including Photoshop, 3D, augmented reality and electronics to create mixed reality board and card games. The resulting ideas will then be pitched ‘Dragon’s Den’ style to a team of experts. Table Top Hack and Build takes place on Wednesday 17th, Thursday 18th and Friday 19th August from 10:30am to 5:00pm, with an additional ‘pitch’ session 6:00pm to 7:30pm on Friday19 August. The cost for the three day workshop is £70.00, lunch not provided, but there will be a break so packed lunches are recommended.

Minecraft Fun Land is a chance to create a ‘Minecraft Theme Park’ world with fantastical rides, rollercoasters and attractions. The workshop is suitable for young people aged eight and above, who will be working collaboratively with the group Blockbuilders. Minecraft Fun Land takes place on Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st August, from 10:30am to 4:00pm. Participants can attend either day. The cost is £40.00 per day, lunch is not provided, but there will be a break so and packed lunches are recommended.

In its Cinemas, QUAD will be screening the new family friendly release The BFG from 22nd July. Fun for kids of all ages, The BFG (PG) is director Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of one of the classic tales by Roald Dahl. Mark Rylance stars as the kind-hearted BFG who rescues Sophie from her orphanage and takes her to a magical world. 

QUAD will also be screening of Cine Kids – daily Family Friendly films over the summer holidays. Films will include: The Secret Life Of Pets (U), 5th – 18th August, Long Way North (U) 19th – 25th August and Finding Dory (U) 26th August – 6th September. All Cine Kids tickets are just £3.50 for Cine Kids Club members, Cine Kids family membership is available at QUAD Box office for a one-off fee of £12 which covers the whole family. Cine Kids customers should check QUAD website for film screening times.

QUAD is also screening a season of classic animated family friendly films over the summer from one of the greatest international animation studios. ‘Studio Ghibli Forever’ includes a selection of Japanese ‘anime’ films: Princess Kaguya (PG)  Saturday 23rd – Thursday 28th July, Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind (PG) Friday 29th July – Thursday 4th August, Laputa Castle In The Sky (PG) Friday 5th – Thursday 11th August and Porco Rosso (PG) Friday 12th – Thursday 18th August.

In QUAD Gallery, Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf is a fully playable ten-hole mini golf course designed by artists and fun for all the family!

Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf is an exhibition which transforms QUAD Gallery into a playful environment, taking visitors on an amusing but thought-provoking journey. The installation uses the fun and accessible game of mini-golf as a powerful tool for questioning the leisure industry and society's compulsion for consumption and other important topics from migration to global warming and globalisation. 

Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf is on display in QUAD Gallery until Sunday 4th September 2016. Additional ‘Leisure Land Late Nights’ take place in QUAD Gallery on Thursdays 4th  & 25th  August when the Gallery will be open until 9:00pm.

QUAD’s regular Family Friendly Activities will also continue. Lego Saturday takes place in QUAD every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00am until 4:00pm in the Family Friendly Resource area just outside QUAD Gallery. Lego Saturday is a free activity for children aged three and above (and grown-ups!) to come and have a play with Lego, all children should be accompanied.
