In 16th century Japan three powerful warlords are in the midst of a brutal civil war for the conquest of Kyoto. One of them, Shingen Takada, employs a lowly thief as his double to deceive his enemies on the battlefield. When the real lord is mortally wounded the clan’s generals decide to conceal what has happened and employ the double as a puppet leader whilst they hold the reins of power behind the scenes. Director Akira Kurosawa returns to the samurai action genre which made him internationally famous and with an increased budget, thanks to international supporters like George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, which enabled him to work on the grandest scale of his career to that point. Tatsuya Nakadai offers two astounding performances as the lord and his double and the result is a classic of world cinema.
