New Writing Courses this Autumn and Winter

02 October 2018
As the nights grow darker, QUAD will be presenting a host of fresh writing and publishing courses at the venue, offering plenty of insight and inspiration for aspiring writers of all levels.

A series of one-day courses will take place on Thursday evenings. Preparing Your Work For Publication is designed to help authors ready to send their work to publishers, to create a submission package that will really impress. Followed by a one-day Poetry Surgery, to develop new ideas as well as look at the forms and techniques used in the field. In November, Writing Compelling Crime Fiction, with popular crime author Sarah Ward, aims to show authors how to develop dramatic tension and pace within their crime stories.

The venue’s first afternoon writing course, Introduction to Creative Writing, takes place over four weeks. Participants will have the chance to explore and develop their skills in writing fundamentals such as story structure, characterisation, description and dialogue.

Another four week writing course Get Yourself Published provides a concise tour of the publishing industry, looking at literary magazines, agents, small presses and self-publishing and making writers aware of the best route for their work.

In December Writing Ghost Stories workshop returns to look at this enduringly popular form and helping authors develop atmosphere, story structure and effective chills in their supernatural tales. The literature year rounds off with Writing to a Theme workshop, giving authors advice on how to respond to different ideas and prompts to create new fiction – a great skill for anyone looking to get short fiction published.

QUAD’s Literature Officer, Alex Davis, said: “I’m really excited by the courses rounding off 2018. We’re constantly looking to explore new avenues of fiction with our activities, and the initial response to these new concepts has been great.”
