Derby BFI Film Academy

This summer, QUAD is delighted to be exhibiting 9 incredible short films produced by participants of our BFI Film Academy.  Screened in QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces from 22 July – 27 August! , this collection exemplifies the ambition, talent and creativity of young filmmakers from Derby and the Midlands.

Funded by the British Film Institute, QUAD has delivered the BFI Film Academy in Derby for the last three years, supporting young people aged 16-19 to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills needed to help them forge a career in the film industry.  Each year, young filmmakers taking part in the programme at QUAD develop their own stories and scripts, adapting a selection of these into short films which are then produced collaboratively by the group utilising their new skills and experiences.

The films exhibited in QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces are bold and hard-hitting, covering mature themes and topical issues that resonate with the filmmakers, as well as the audience.  Each film that has been produced is a testament to the passion, resilience and vision of the BFI Film Academy participants.  Please note that some of these films are unsuitable for young children due to the themes addressed.

The BFI Film Academy Short Film Collection includes Escaping Time (2021), Lost & Found (2021), Two Lives (2021), Drowning Thoughts (2022), Lighthouse Box (2022), Odd One Out (2022), The Monster Downstairs (2023), Mould (2023), and Run Away (2023).

QUAD provides accessible opportunities for young people from Derby to develop both their creative and employability skills through accessible experiences with arts and culture, particularly in film and digital media.  If you or someone you know is aged 16-19, passionate about film and looking for a career in the film industry, please register your interest and receive application information directly into your inbox this summer:
