‘Lighten Up’ QUAD’s programme of film screenings taking place in UK cathedrals
QUAD has announced a programme of film screenings called ‘Lighten Up’ taking place in cathedrals across the country. ‘Lighten Up’ has been programmed as a part of ‘BFI Comedy Genius’, a nationwide season celebrating the best in film and TV comedy, supported by funds from the National Lottery, led by Film Hub Midlands on behalf of the BFI UK Film Audience Network.
‘Lighten Up’ screenings will take place from November 2018 until January 2019, in cathedrals across the country, including at Derby Cathedral, Southwell Minster, Southwark Cathedral, Portsmouth Cathedral, Bristol Cathedral and Coventry Cathedral, with full film details and further venues to be announced. Find out more here.
The tour starts with two screenings at Derby Cathedral on Wednesday 21st November, with Sister Act (PG) screening at 5:30pm and Monty Python’s Life Of Brian (15) screening at 8:30pm. Tickets are priced at £13, £10 Concessions.
There will be two screenings at Southwell Minster in November. The General will be screened with live organ accompaniment by Donald Mackenzie, the organist of the ODEON Leicester Square. Described by Orson Welles as “the greatest comedy ever made, the greatest Civil War film ever made, and perhaps the greatest film ever made”, Buster Keaton’s The General is a comedy adventure classic and the last major film of the silent era. It’s based on a true incident, the Great Locomotive Chase; with the ‘General’ of the title referring not to Keaton’s character, engineer Johnnie Gray, but also to the engine. In what was an ambitious and very expensive production, (at the time), Keaton performs all his own stunts, using his incredible comic timing, body language and his trademark deadpan humour to create hilarious, near perfect entertainment. The General (U) with live organ accompaniment takes place Friday 23rd November at 7:30pm. Tickets are priced at £13, £10 Concessions or £35 for a family ticket (two adults and two children).
The Greatest Showman is the best-selling musical, based on the true tale of the life of showman P.T. Barnum. Starring Hugh Jackman as the legendary figure alongside an all-star cast including Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson. The Greatest Showman (PG) screens at Southwell Minster on Saturday 24th November at 3:15pm. Tickets are £13, £11 Concessions, £10 for those aged under 25 years) or £35 for a Family ticket (2 adults, 2 children).
Glenn Formoy, Head of Marketing & Events at Southwell Minster said “We are delighted to be hosting ‘Lighten Up!’ in the historic surroundings of Southwell Minster. The space has been a place of joy, gathering and celebration for almost a thousand years, and we are looking forward to welcoming audiences for these two films to the spectacular nave”
