Three New Writing Courses Come To QUAD In October

October sees three new writing courses coming to QUAD, each running over eight weeks. Led by Derby-based author, tutor and Creative Writing lecturer Alex Davis, Introduction To Creative Writing and Writing A Novel courses begin in QUAD on Monday 10th October. Starting on Monday 18th October, The Art Of Playwriting And Screenwriting For The Contemporary Market is led by award-winning playwright Tina Jay.
 
Introduction to Creative Writing course will be providing a broad overview of the areas that will be most useful to writers just starting out on their creative journey. Looking at pivotal areas such as story structure, characterisation, dialogue, description and many more, this course aims to set you off and allow you to explore your ideas in fiction writing whatever they may be. Introduction to Creative Writing runs on Mondays from 1pm – 3pm, course fees range from £120 to £90. https://www.derbyquad.co.uk/IntroToCreativeWriting

Writing a Novel course will focus on developing substantial writing projects, looking at planning and plotting, writing schedules, keeping creating in the longer term and examining in more depth the various stages of the novel writing process and you push towards completion. This course would be ideal for those with a little writing experience looking to write an extended project, or those who have perhaps found novel writing difficult. Writing a Novel course runs on Mondays from 6:30pm – 9:00pm, course fees range from £120 to £90. https://www.derbyquad.co.uk/WritingANovel
 
The Art Of Playwriting And Screenwriting For The Contemporary Market will cover both screenwriting and playwriting looks similarities and differences between the two forms of scriptwriting, the various techniques involved for each. The sessions, taking place over eight weeks, will concentrate on specific areas of the process, encouraging the development of new original ideas whilst theorising and analysing what makes a script successful in the contemporary scriptwriting marketplace. Course Leader Tina Jay’s plays have been performed across London, including Tristan Bates Theatre, The Park Theatre, Greenwich Theatre, Barons Court and Rich Mix, and The Royal Exchange Manchester. The Art Of Playwriting And Screenwriting For The Contemporary Market Course runs on Mondays from 6:30pm – 8:30pm, course fees range from £130 to £100. https://www.derbyquad.co.uk/PlaywritingCourse

Course leader Alex Davis said: “I’m delighted to be back at QUAD for these courses, having been teaching on and off at the venue almost since it opened, these course do offer very different things for writers at all sorts of levels.”

Alex will also be leading on a horror and thriller event for Halowe’en weekend, Darker Days, which runs on 29th October at QUAD and will feature guest workshops from authors Helen Cooper (The Downstairs Neighbour, The Other Guest), Tom Mead (Death and the Conjuror) and Teika Marija Smits (Russian Doll, The Forgotten).
