QUAD and The Mechatronic Library are pleased to announce a new 44-page full colour publication and interactive poster of the project Warm Worlds and Otherwise by Anna Bunting Branch.

As the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK, one of the exhibitions in QUAD Gallery was Anna Bunting-Branch’s Warm Worlds and Otherwise featuring a new VR commission and accompanying installation, with sound work by Aliyah Hussain, co-curated by Helen Starr of The Mechatronic Library and Peter Bonnell of QUAD.

The new publication is envisioned as a ‘care package’ in times of pandemic, a way to reach out to audiences and share Bunting-Branch’s multi-venue touring exhibition (commissioned by The Mechatronic Library, QUAD, FACT Liverpool and Wsying Arts centre, and exhibited at the latter three venues). The publication features images from the exhibitions and elements of the VR work, plus the essay ‘Ontologies of the Caribbean Sea’ by The Mechatronic library founder, writer and curator Helen Starr that weaves many inspirations from Bunting-Branch’s work, and also an introduction text by Peter Bonnell. The special-edition poster features a new artwork by Bunting-Branch with embedded QR codes allowing viewers to experience her immersive animations and artwork remotely.

Further words about Warm Worlds and Otherwise at QUAD:
The exhibition relates to Bunting-Branch’s interest in the encounters between feminist practice and science fiction—engaging painting, digital animation and Virtual Reality to explore ideas of worldbuilding, embodied perception and technologies of representation. 

Central to the project is META (2019), an experimental 360-degree VR animation transforming the artists’ hand-painted characters, props and backdrops into an immersive virtual story world. Also included is the new installation AU Sandbox (2020) which expands her imagined worlds, and an accompanying ambient sound piece by artist Aliyah Hussain that underscores the viewer’s experience in the gallery space as well as in the virtual environment. 

The first iteration of Warm Worlds and Otherwise was presented at Wysing Arts Centre in October 2018, with subsequent presentations being developed for FACT (2019) and QUAD (2020). Warm Worlds and Otherwise is supported using public funding by Arts Council England. https://annabuntingbranch.com/
