QUAD celebrates Shakespeare’s 400th Anniversary

QUAD presents a total of nine live events marking Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary with performances screened live from The Royal Shakespeare Company, The British Film Institute, The Globe On Screen and The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company.

Shakespeare Live! is a one-off event from The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) marking the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. Screening live from Stratford-upon-Avon and hosted by David Tennant, this star-studded event celebrates the Bard’s plays and their enduring influence on music, dance, opera, musical theatre and comedy. Shakespeare Live! From The RSC screens live into QUAD on Saturday 23rd April at 8:15pm. Tickets are £15 and £13 concessions.

Also in April, The British Film Institute (BFI) Presents Richard III with a live post screening Q&A. In a striking adaptation of Richard III, the action is transferred to an imagined war-wracked Europe of the 1930s and Shakespeare’s most notorious villain into a fascistic despot. This special cinema event includes a live 30 minute discussion with Sir Ian McKellen and Director Richard Loncraine broadcast live from the BFI Southbank. Richard III (15) plus live post screening Q&A from the Southbank screens in QUAD on Thursday 28th April at 7:30pm. Tickets are: £12 and £11 concessions.

The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live cinema season continues with a new vision of Shakespeare’s heart-breaking tale of forbidden love, Romeo And Juliet in a modern passionate version of the classic tragedy. Branagh Theatre Live Romeo And Juliet (12A) screens in QUAD on Thursday 7th July at 7:15pm. 

The Royal Shakespeare Company present three productions.

Simon Godwin directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world. RSC: Hamlet (12A) screens in QUAD on Wednesday 8th June at 7:00pm.

Melly Still directs Shakespeare’s rarely performed romance, Cymbeline. RSC: Cymbeline screens in QUAD on Wednesday 28th September at 7:00pm

One of Shakespeare’s most epic and powerful plays, King Lear is directed by RSC Artist Director Gregory Doran with RSC Associate Artist Antony Sher as King Lear, one of Shakespeare’s greatest parts. RSC: King Lear screens in QUAD on Wednesday 12th October at 7:00pm.

The Globe On Screen present three productions.

Measure For Measure, a lesser known work, which is a story of secret identities and manipulation, is restored to its classic glory after a history of quirky adaptations. Measure For Measure screens in QUAD on Tuesday 17th May at 7:00pm & Thursday 19th May at 1:00pm

Jonathan Pryce provides an enigmatic performance in The Merchant Of Venice, an iconic battle between greed and love. The Merchant Of Venice screens in QUAD on Tuesday 28th & Thursday 30th June at 7:00pm

In Richard II, Simon Godwin delivers a dynamic portrayal of a play filled with both violence and comedic irony. The rich colours and lavish costumes of this historical play transfer superbly to the big screen Richard II Screens in QUAD on Tuesday 19th & Thursday 21st July at 7:00pm.

Tickets for The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live, RSC Live and Globe On Screen are £17 and £15 concessions.

QUAD have also teamed up with 1623, the award-winning theatre company, to bring some Shakespeare themed events to QUAD’s programme. Ben Spiller from 1623 will introduce films in a Shakespeare film Season, other events include a Cinematic Shakespeare course for the public and a Shakespeare Masterclass for actors performing for stage and screen. This joint project has been made possible with the support of the British Film Institute. 1623 also has an exciting programme of Shakespeare-related performances, workshops and events throughout the year to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death and his legacy.
