QUAD has three music-related events in February & March

21 February 2017

Desperately Seeking Madonna is a film screening and DJ Night. The film, Desperately Seeking Susan, was Madonna’s first major screen role, set in New York, where two women, a bored housewife and a bohemian drifter, are linked by various announcements in the personal column of a newspaper. A cast of hipster extras includes comedian Steven Wright; John Turturro; Michael Badalucco and Laurie Metcalf, Richard Hell, and performance artist Ann Magnuson. The dance-club sequence helped launch the hit ‘Into the Groove’. Desperately Seeking Susan(15) screens in QUAD on Friday 24th February at 8:00pm. Before and after the screening there will be a DJ night spinning some of the Queen of Pop’s finest cuts in QUAD Café Bar.

In March, the focus is on David Bowie for a film and DJ Night. Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars is a new documentary and concert film capturing Bowie and his band, The Spiders From Mars, performing at London’s Hammersmith Odeon on 3rd July, 1973. It was at this now-infamous concert that Bowie made a sudden announcement, shocking fans and media alike by stating “it’s the last show we’ll ever do”. Rather than marking his withdrawal from music, his declaration signalled the retirement of the Ziggy Stardust persona, and the end of a hugely influential chapter in Bowie’s own story. In addition to the concert movie, the evening will include a new film produced by MOJO magazine exclusively for these screenings. Directed by pioneering rock film-maker D.A. Pennebaker, this film will also feature MOJO’s Editor-In-Chief Phil Alexander in conversation with The Spiders From Mars drummer Woody Woodmansey. As well as re-living that fateful night in 1973, Woody will provide further insight into what he describes as “the adventure of a lifetime.” Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (PG) plus 30 minute exclusive documentary screens in QUAD on Tuesday 7th March at 8:45pm. Tickets for this one-off event are: £13 and £11 Concessions. Before the screening there will be a DJ night spinning some of best Bowie from 7:00pm in the QUAD Café bar.

To complement the screening a new course at QUAD will focus on Bowies’ life and music with tutor Darrell Buxton. Getting Ziggy With It offering a chance to hear and discuss some of the defining sounds of the past five 'art decades' plus Bowie on film, TV, stage, in Berlin, in Beckenham, in make-up and in outer space. Getting Ziggy With It: David Bowie course takes place on Wednesdays from 7:00pm, for five weeks starting on 29th March. Course fees are: £37.50 or £35 concessions.
