QUAD’s Dementia Friendly film screenings in October and December

21 September 2017
Dementia Friendly screenings called ‘Matinée’ continue at QUAD in October and December. Matinée film screenings include a great or classic film, often a musical, with refreshments and interval events such as singing or fun film related quizzes or activities. The screenings are for people with memory challenges or dementia to enjoy alongside their family member, friend or carer. Matinée is part of a movement designed to celebrate World Alzheimer’s Month in September.

Matinée are relaxed screenings with no trailers or adverts, the lights left on low, the volume turned down slightly, and people are free to move around, chat and sing along. The staff are specially trained and there is plenty of signage.

Matinée is organised by Arts Derbyshire in partnership with QUAD, Derbyshire County Council, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, the Film Hub North West Central and the Alzheimers Society, to offer Dementia Friendly Screenings throughout Derbyshire. Matinée is also a member of the BFI Film Audience Network.

In October QUAD’s Matinée screening is Mary Poppins (U) from 1964 on Tuesday 10th October with Meet Me In St Louis (U) from 1944 on Tuesday 12th December. The screenings take place from 1:00pm and tickets are: £6 or £5 concessions, tickets for accompanying carers are free.

Frances Watt from Matinée at Arts Derbyshire said: “We’re thrilled to be able to provide screenings for people living with dementia. It’s a great opportunity for people to come along and enjoy a film with family, friends or carers in a safe and relaxed environment.”
