QUAD/ FORMAT Graduate Fellowships – Adam Whitehouse

Following on from the inaugural QUAD/ FORMAT Graduate Fellowships that began in 2020, we are pleased to announce the two artists selected for 2023 – Sarah Blandford and Adam Whitehouse.

The Fellowships were created as an annual award to recognise two outstanding graduating students from the University of Derby MA Fine Art and MA Film & Photography course – selected by members of the QUAD/ FORMAT Curatorial team.

Both graduates will each undertake a 2-week fellowship and residency in QUAD’s Artist Studio, along with mentoring and curatorial support from QUAD’s Programme Team.

The Fellowships will take place between 8 May to 4 June 2023 and will include takeovers by each artist of the QUAD Gallery Instagram page.

Adam Whitehouse

Statement: Adam Whitehouse is a filmmaker, digital artist and freelance Production Designer for film & television. His work crosses several mediums, from the moving image, animation, 3D-rendered art and physical installations – all linked together thematically under a fascination with the technological and the dystopian. Originally focusing on more traditional filmmaking & cinematography techniques, his practice eventually turned towards post-production and visual effects, with this increasing fascination with technology being reflected in the subject matter of his work. Heavily inspired by generational angst, technophobia and multimedia tropes, his work seeks to act equally as both a reflection and a critique of humankind’s difficult relationship with technology and future.

Bio: Adam Whitehouse’s career began in commercial video production, and eventually expanded into narrative and experimental film – often working across several different departments; from directing, cinematography, editing and Production Design. His Production Design work has recently led him towards working on several films funded by the BFI and Film4, and a growing career as a freelance filmmaker. He studied at Derby University, graduating with both a BA in Film Production and an MA in Film & Photography, receiving a First Class Honours, a Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence and a Distinction, respectively. His final MA project ‘Euhedracene’ was given the QUAD/Format MA Graduate Fellowship Award, and he now seeks to pursue a career as a visual artist alongside his film industry work, with each mutually inspiring the other.”
