From the moment she glimpses her idol on Broadway, Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) strives to upstage Margo Channing (Bette Davis), a darling of the stage who - having just turned forty(!) - is worried about her ongoing career prospects. After ingratiating herself into Margo's inner circle, Eve is hired as an assistant and soon schemes her way into becoming her mentor's understudy. Eve's drive to supplant Margo leads her to manipulate all those close to the actress; causing turmoil in Margo's personal and professional life and eventually landing herself a starring role of her own - but her meteoric, and ruthless, rise to top isolates her from her peers and draws the suspicions of the cynical theatre critic, Addison DeWitt. George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill and Thelma Ritter co-star with Marilyn Monroe making an early film appearance.
