DFF: Blackmail (PG) + Neil Brand Live Score at Derby Cathedral

15 Nov 2019

Directed by

Alfred Hitchcock

Derby Film Festival returns to Derby Cathedral for another screening of a classic, with live score performed by the acclaimed Neil Brand.

In Alfred Hitchcock's 1929 film Blackmail London saleswoman Alice White sneaks away from her fiancé to go out on an ill-advised date with the sleazy artist, Mr Crewe. However, as the naive girl is lured into Crewe's studio, his sinister sexual advances will soon arm Alice's hand with a serrated bread knife, and before she knows it, the man lies dead in a pool of blood. As Alice flees the scene of the crime in a numb haze, while the news of the unknown killer is spreading like wildfire, an invisible eyewitness will become a ruthless blackmailer. But, what will it take to keep him quiet?

We are delighted to welcome Neil Brand to the festival to perform his score to the film. Neil Brand is considered one of the finest improvising piano accompanists in the world has been performing at silent film screenings for over 30 years, regularly in London at the Barbican and BFI National Film Theatres, throughout the UK and at film festivals and special events around the world.
