Green Book tells the uplifting true story of an odds-defying friendship against the backdrop of racial division in 1960s America. Set in 1962, the film follows Italian-American Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), who is hired to chauffeur African-American pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Moonlight’s Oscar Winning Mahershala Ali) on a concert tour of the Deep South. Don is wary of the troubles he will face due to the colour of his skin and requires someone as chauffeur and protector. Tony isn’t the obvious choice as his views on race are problematic, but he has the muscle, so the unlikely pair embark on a life changing journey. A surprisingly heart-warming delight from director Peter Farrelly (better known for Dumb and Dumber / There’s Something About Mary) who balances the entertaining elements without sugar-coating the tensions of the time, and creates a significant reminder of the challenges that everyday racism can still bring.
Nominated for Five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.
