The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2020
Happiness is A State of Mind: Joy and Despair in Japanese Cinema
The Japan Foundation’s annual touring film programme returns in 2020 with an exciting showcase of Japanese cinema through the narrative framework of the ways in which people feel ‘happiness’.
Nobody lives their lives wishing to be unhappy. This yearning for happiness has been expressed in many artistic forms and reflects the audiences’ desire to ‘feel good’ – a concept which has been thoroughly covered in the entertainment industry, with cinematic cultures all over the world offering various imaginative, and quite often utopian, worlds where characters attain their “happily ever after”. In the 21st century, the road to happiness and the ways in which Japanese people feel good might not be so straight- forward, given that they live in a complex world with uncertain future. What is it that they feel content with and what do filmmakers wish to express in their cinematic voices? This year’s Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme will look into the ways Japanese people try to lead their own lives in pursuit of personal satisfaction and beyond.
QUAD will screen eleven films from the programme in February 2020, beginning with a special director Q+A screening of Her Sketchbook on the evening of 7 February at 6:10pm ahead of screenings of another ten films over the weekend of 21 - 23 February.
Tickets to individual screenings can be booked at the links below. Season passes allowing entry to all eleven films at a significant discount are also available.
Organised by the Japan Foundation with Major Support from Japan Airlines, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, and Yakult, and with Sponsorship in Kind from SUQQU and the Japan Centre.
