Before going on to form Studio Ghibli and create some of cinemas most beloved animated films such as My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki made his feature directing debut with this caper adapted from the Lupin III manga series by Monkey Punch. Lupin III is a master thief who, along with his cohort Jigen, pulls off a heist in Monte Carlo - only to discover they have actually made away with worthless counterfeit bills. Their quest to discover the money’s source leads them to a small European province, where they become embroiled in a plot from by the evil Count Cagliostro to seize power through an arranged marriage to Princess Clarisse. Miyazaki proved himself a genius of animated storytelling from his very first film with this pacy, amusing adventure.
