Satori Screen: Princess Raccoon (PG) S

08 Nov 2019

Directed by

Seijun Suzuki

Princess Raccoon

A beautiful prince is banished by his father, who is jealous of his looks. Abandoned in a forest, the prince encounters a raccoon that has taken human form and the two soon fall in love, much to the chagrin of the racoon council. And that’s just the beginning of the strange and visually stunning events that take place in this cinematic operetta from director Seijin Suzuki (Branded To Kill, Tokyo Drifter). Made when the director had reached the grand age of 82 the film demonstrated that age had dimmed none of the inventiveness and wild ambition which marked his famous earlier films. Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) takes the title role, alongside Joe Odagiri (Adrift In Tokyo, I Wish) as the prince.

“An energetic, inventive and ever-so-slightly insane mishmash of music, magic and madness … It's clear that Suzuki is having a ball” – Mark Kermode

This screening will include an introduction by Satori Screen's Peter Munford.
