Charity Hope Valentine (Shirley MacLaine) always tries to look on the bright side of life, despite her working in a rundown dance hall and contending with a seemingly endless run of bad dates. Determined to find love, she falls for actor Vittorio Vidal (Ricardo Montalban), but their romance is short-lived. However, when she finds herself struck in an elevator with the reserved Oscar Lindquist (John McMartin), it seems she may have finally met her match.
Bob Fosse’s 1969 musical comedy-drama Sweet Charity stars the great MacLaine alongside an all-star ensemble cast including Sammy Davis Jr (performing ‘Rhythm Of Life’ in a brilliant musical scene), with amazing costumes (by Edith Head), fantastic songs (such as ‘Hey, Big Spender’) and dance sequences (including ‘Rich Man’s Frug’).
Please note: There will be an introduction to Sweet Charity on the Sunday 15th December, 3pm screening by Dr. Teresa Forde, Senior Lecturer in Film and Media at University Of Derby.
Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO. bfimusicals.co.uk
