Lost Voices - Female Authors And The Development Of The Victorian Ghost Story

30 Nov 2019
Lost Voices

With Johnny Mains

In this keynote talk, Johnny Mains – editor of the acclaimed A SUGGESTION OF GHOSTS and AN OBSCURITY OF GHOSTS (Black Shuck Books) – will discuss what he believes to be the golden age of digital archive research and possibly the last decade where lost works will be discovered as more and more libraries and organistations scan and upload their archives for public consumption. This session will look at how women writers were not just societal ladies, but were coming from all walks of life, especially in America, and that their lives more than ever were feeding into a genre that was ready to accept these seismic changes. Mains will also discuss how provincial newspapers offered an unexpected lifeline to the survival of the ghost story when books were expensive to buy and how many women became household names but will also discuss why so many are now utterly obscure and are only being re-discovered for modern audiences curious to know the heritage of our horrors.
